I’ve Been Where You Are

December 14, 2022. I am sitting in on a webinar about the release of ChatGPT 3.5 and what AI is going to mean for marketing professionals. At the time, I am a Senior Marketing Specialist, doing what I have always done: working hard, building my expertise, showing up every day.

Within an hour of playing with the tool, I felt exactly what most professionals feel the first time they sit down with it.

Fear.

Oh my gosh. This thing is actually going to take my job. What am I going to do?

I know you have felt it too. That moment when the ground shifts under you and you are not sure which way to stand.

What Changed

A few more hours in, something else started to happen.

I stopped being afraid and started getting curious.

I realized I was looking at this the wrong way. This was not a replacement. This was a new tool and an entirely new way of working was about to emerge from it. So instead of stepping back, I decided to go headfirst.

I said to myself: My expertise does not disappear because of this tool. It gets amplified by it. I can be any persona, any expert, at any time. I do not need to start over. I need to start thinking differently.

That shift in perspective changed everything.

The Forever Student

All of 2023, I became what I still call myself to this day: a forever student.

I spent over a thousand hours, courses, books, articles, late nights, early mornings, learning everything I could about how these tools work, how to work with them, and how to bring my own expertise into the equation. Not to become a technology expert. To become a better professional who knows how to direct these tools rather than be directed by them.

This technology moves fast. There is always a new update, a new capability, a new way of doing things. The only answer to that is to stay curious, stay open, and keep learning. That is a mindset no machine can replicate and no one can take from you.

Writing My Own Future

By 2024, I could see something clearly: the professional who could bridge human expertise and AI capability was not just valuable, that role did not even exist yet in most organizations.

So I wrote up a job description for exactly that person and sent it to my CEO and the full C-suite.

A few months later, that position existed. I applied for it. I got it.

I essentially wrote my own future, went after it, and empowered my employer to create something that had never been there before. That experience taught me more about what these tools make possible than any course ever could.

Why I Built This Practice

That experience showed me something I could not stop thinking about. What happened to me, the fear, the shift, the decision to go all in as a student, the ability to write my own future, does not have to be rare. Every professional and every business owner has that same capacity. Most just have not had anyone show them the door.

There is only one letter of difference between change and chance. Replace the G with a C and everything opens up. One small shift in how you see your work, your tools, and your own ability is all it takes to go from grinding through the same day over and over to building something completely different.

That is why Empowerment and Adaptability Solutions exists. Not to teach software. To give you the chance to see what becomes possible when you stop thinking like a machine and start leading like a human.
